Sovereign to Deliver Intimate Statement on Cancer in Television Programme
King Charles has recorded a personal message regarding his journey with cancer, scheduled for transmission as part of this year's Stand Up To Cancer initiative, spearheaded by Cancer Research UK and Channel 4.
Buckingham Palace stated the King would discuss his "path to recovery" as a individual battling cancer, in a video message on this Friday at 20:00 GMT.
The recording, taped inside a royal residence two weeks ago, will stress the importance of routine screenings to help guarantee more people catch the illness at an early stage.
This represents a uncommon insight on the medical condition of the Monarch, who has been in a course of therapy since his condition was announced in early last year. Analysts suggest unlikely the King will identify his specific form of cancer.
The Campaign's Central Purpose
The Stand Up To Cancer initiative each year collects money for clinical trials and patient care and encourages people to get screenings to increase the odds of an early diagnosis.
The King's candid approach about his illness, and his experience as a patient, has been aimed to promote education and to encourage more people to get screened - and this will be advanced with this exceptional royal involvement.
So far the King's key philosophy to his cancer has been to continue his schedule, upholding a busy schedule despite his ongoing course of treatment, and he is understood not to have sought to be defined by his diagnosis.
This year has seen the Sovereign, embarking on several international tours, such as visits to Italy and Canada, and welcoming the highest tally of foreign dignitaries to the UK for decades, including the German president last week.
Charity Evening Programme
This Friday's Stand Up to Cancer show on the network, hosted by celebrities including a team of famous hosts, will appeal to people not to be afraid of getting health screenings.
All three have been affected by cancer - one host revealed last month she had had an operation for a tumour, while Clare Balding was overcame thyroid cancer over a decade ago. Presenter Hills has previously discussed his father, who had one form of cancer and then later blood cancer.
The show will appeal to the approximate 9m people in the UK who health organisations state are not up to date with national health programmes, with an online checker to let people determine if they are eligible for tests for key health indicators.
In an bid to clarify health tests and illustrate the value of timely identification there will be a live broadcast from treatment centres at Addenbrooke's and Royal Papworth hospitals in Cambridge.
"My aim is to reduce the stigma out of health checks and show everyone that they are not on their own in this," stated one of the hosts.
The Landscape of Screening Programmes
Currently in the UK, there are three publicly available checks - for specific cancers - available to certain age groups.
A emerging preventative initiative is also being phased in for anyone at increased risk of being diagnosed with the illness, specifically targeting people aged 55-74 years old, who are smokers or have smoked in the past.
Individuals may request prostate cancer checks, but there is not a universal scheme in place.
Charitable Impact
The charity campaign, which has generated £113m for many years, is financing multiple research studies involving many patients.
The Monarch, in a statement for dignitaries at a reception for cancer charities in earlier this year, had referred to understanding the "overwhelming and at times scary experience" for patients and their families.
But he said his experience of living with cancer had revealed that "the most difficult times of illness can be illuminated by the greatest compassion," as he praised those who supported those receiving treatment.
Official sources has not disclosed what kind of cancer the King has, or the therapies he has undergone. The King's cancer was identified following he had received a prostate procedure.
