Information Available Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Terrorist Incident

At least 16 individuals lost their lives and over 40 were hurt when gunmen fired on a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an attack local authorities have called a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities stands at 16, encompassing one of the suspected gunmen. Additionally, 42 people with injuries were transported to medical facilities.

The deceased have not yet been formally identified, but investigators think their ages span between 10 and 87 years of age.

Below are the individuals who have been identified at this time.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Known as a father-of-five, he was the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.

She told the events before the shooting, stating they were standing when the shooting began. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having endured immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Officially, the Foreign Minister expressed that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the message continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was a fatality during the attack, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, many remain receiving treatment, with several in critical condition. Those hurt include two officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Called a hero, he received bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Reports indicate he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He told reporters he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
