A popular South African radio and club DJ has been shot dead in the nation's economic hub Johannesburg, triggering widespread grief across a nation battling persistent crime.

Warrick Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras, was shot and killed in the central business district on Tuesday afternoon.

Authorities reported the forty-year-old presenter was confronted by a trio of assailants, with one shot at him before fleeing on foot.

The reason of the incident is unknown and no suspects have been apprehended have taken place, according to authorities.

Details of the Attack

Police said that Stock was ambushed as he was exiting a building close to the city center landmark.

He had spent several hours at the building overseeing the setup of security systems, which had been illegally inhabited by unidentified individuals, it was reported.

"Authorities believe the man was approached by three unidentified men after parking his vehicle, and they opened fire at him before fleeing the scene on foot," authorities confirmed.

Security camera video reportedly captured a suspect with dreadlocked hair and wearing what resembled a guard's attire shooting on Stock before making his escape.

The DJ attempted to flee after he was hit but fell down a short distance away.

Police added that Stock had an weapon on his person and nothing was taken during the assault.
