Gavin Newsom Acknowledges He Is Weighing a 2028 Presidential Run
The California governor, a well-known member of the Democratic party, has revealed that he will decide on whether to run for president in 2028 following the 2026 congressional elections wrap up.
"Yes, I couldn't be truthful otherwise," the governor remarked when asked about seriously considering a campaign for president after the 2026 midterms. "It wouldn't be the truth. And I can't do that."
The governor's time in office as California's leader ends in the start of 2027, and he cannot run again. But, he noted that any choice is a long way off.
"It's up to destiny," he remarked.
Increased Visibility as a Political Adversary
He has come to the forefront as a prominent adversary of the former president's team, employing his online platforms and championing a initiative that would boost Democratic House seats in response to Republican redistricting efforts. This strategy has drawn criticism from critics.
Controversy Over Funds
The former president's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, claimed that the governor is indifferent about Californians in a Sunday interview on Fox News. Duffy announced intentions to cut federal funds from California and warned eliminating the authority to provide trucking licenses.
"I intend to cut $160m from the state," Duffy stated, in the wake of a recent tragic collision in California involving an non-citizen trucker that resulted in three deaths and injured individuals.
His administration pointed out that the federal government had reauthorized the driver's employment on several occasions, which enabled him to secure a commercial driver's license under national regulations.
The transportation secretary had before indicated he was withholding $40 million from California for failing to implement English language requirements for commercial drivers.
Pointed Reply from the Governor's Office
"Former D-list reality star, now transportation chief, continues to misunderstand U.S. regulations," the governor's team responded in a recent comment addressing Duffy's threats. "In the meantime, in contrast to this person, we'll stick to the facts: The state's commercial driver's license holders had a fatal crash rate much lower than the U.S. average. The state of Texas – the only state with a larger number of CDL holders – has a rate almost 50% higher than California. Facts don't lie. The federal leadership misleads."
Voter Sentiment and Future Prospects
A recently conducted poll found that a majority of the party and almost half of voters said that Newsom should run for president in the next election cycle. After the current administration began, public support for the governor has risen to an typical level of a third from approximately 30%, while his negative ratings has decreased from an average of more than 40% to 38.4%.
Earlier this year, the governor stated while traveling several swing states that he had "no clue" about his plans for 2028.
He mentioned his past difficulties, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the early childhood.
"The thought that a guy who scored 960 on the SAT, who has ongoing difficulties with text, who was often seated at the back – the idea that you would even throw that out is, in and of itself, extraordinary," he said. "It's anyone's guess? I'm looking forward to who steps forward in the next election and who answers the call. And that remains the key point for the voters."
